What is packet switching?

Packet switching is technology in which digitalized voice is compressed and segmented into data packets. An identifying address is then created in each packet - a label or destination tag. The voice packets, now transformed into data, are routed by the best available way in a data network. This type of communication does not establish a dedicated circuit between A and B and is more efficient.

The principle is to segment and assemble the packet, and to transmit voice information over the data network, making use of infrastructure that is already needed by the operator to provide data services. This is achieved by use of the IP protocol (Internet protocol), which gives us voice over IP, or VoIP, a worldwide trend. However, if the operator's network uses the ATM protocol, we shall have voice over ATM. This is the assumption in network convergence. The architecture of this new network is based on the "OPT" or open-packet telephony concept, or open-architecture packet telephony.

What Trópico supplies to operators are assured voice-transmission quality, full control of the voice and data network, the provision of services in a transparent manner, and many other advantages. All in a very gradual manner, making full use of the existing telephone network. After all, to understand all about telephony in Brazil and be in charge of a large portion of the installed TDM plant, one must know exactly how to manage the migration of technology to the world of new-generation networks.
