High-growth rates, added to the goal of universalized access to telecommunications services,
lead to the need of pursuing low-cost solutions for network expansion. The swift technological
development and current uncertainties require that a telecommunications network have the needed
flexibility to meet still unprovided for future demands. The growth in data traffic and a telephone
network’s inability to cope with it will, in the near future, lead to greater decentralization
in the processing of such signals. Costs, quality and greater potentiality and flexibility in the
meeting of future service demands are factors that are already leading to greater network
opticalization and greater voice-signal processing decentralization.
